Matter out of place is about hidden truths, concealment and forced displacement. It sheds a light on an unfair and shameful page of Mauritian and British history in which the entire population of The Chagos Archipelago was forcefully displaced from their homeland due to political agendas between 1968 – 1973. As a native of the island of Mauritius, with Chagossian origins, I explore Chagossian culture and history through food, music, objects and souvenirs. Building narratives around specific artifacts and around The Chagos Archipelago as an invisible location, Matter Out of Place draws attention to the aftermath of colonialism and the struggles of the Chagossian community.

Matter Out of Place - The Chagossian Community

"Entre deux" literally means "in between two". It is the documentation of places and objects significant for me in both Manchester and Mauritius. I have created a space in between those two countries as a representation of how I feel. As an outsider, in between two countries, in between two cultures and in between what I consider as my two homes. It is inspired mostly by a feeling of displacement and not belonging; when I am in Mauritius I crave for Manchester and vice versa. Making use of 35mm film, I shot a whole roll in Manchester before going back to where I was born - after being away for two years- and re shot on the same roll once there. I left the end result up to chance and the final photos coincidentally combine in the prettiest ways my two homes, Mauritius and Manchester.
